DILLON, THE REAL STAR OF THE SHOW
Teaming Up With Bird Dogs Afield
Over the years, readers have asked why I seldom write anything about upland bird hunting, especially the use of pointing dogs. "It's kind of like being an adult that never learned how to swim." I tell them. I grew up in a large family (17 brothers and sisters) and we were never exposed to the refined methods for hunting grouse and woodcock. In fact I am the epitome of the standard grouse hunters joke. "If you shoot it on the ground, it's a partridge. If you shoot the bird while it is flying, it's a grouse." I'm, a "partridge" hunter to the bone but I decided to see how the other half hunts so I teamed up with my good friend, Paul Fuller of Durham, NH, the man behind the popular website, www.birddogsafield.com. Together we travelled some of the best grouse (partridge) and woodcock covers in the Northeast and Canada.
