Q. I'm seeing a lot of male turkeys that have the face of a jake but full tail fans. Why?
A. In the fall of the year hunters will notice three distinctly different classes of male turkeys. The young of the year (Jakes) yearlings - jakes that were born over 12 months ago and Mature gobblers. This is normal. The jakes born in 2011 will remain with the brood hen. The yearlings will form gangs of 3-10 males and constantly fight teach other for dominanace and the mature gobblers will roam alone or with one or two others, fending off flock challenges from the yearlings.
Q. There's a lot of talk this year about the increased number of turkeys competing with deer for food. Is this bad?
A. This is normal. You and I may both eat at Burger King but I doubt either of us will deplete the food supply. Most often the turkeys will mungle with deer to pick up the scraps of acorns that deer crack open.
